Summer is on its way and that means sunshine.
While we all love to get out and about in great weather, there are a few things that we do during this time that are not so good for our rings.
Sunscreen – it’s a necessary evil in this land of ours and inevitably using it results in coating beautiful jewellery and dimming its sparkle.
Sand – we are surrounded in water and most of us head to the beach at the first sign of blue skies.
Whether you sit in a deck chair or get involved with the sand castle building, you are likely to end up with sand coating your fingers at some point.
Digging in the garden has the same effect.
A good rule of thumb is that if something is rough on your hands, it is rough on your jewellery.
Sand and dirt scratch the metal and softer stones, so it is a good idea to remove your jewellery before getting back to nature.
If you do find yourself with less than sparkly jewellery, you can spruce it up a bit at home.
Simply take a clean toothbrush and a bowl of warm soapy water and gently clean away any sunscreen build-up, sand or dirt.
If you do spot any scratches on your gemstones, we can restore them to their former glory by unsetting the stones and having a lapidist recut the facets.
Every so often it’s good to get your jewellery cleaned professionally, and if we are not busy, the Village Jeweller team can often work their magic while you wait.
