Mother’s Day has been around since the days of ancient Greece, with festivals in honour of Rhea, the mother of the gods.
Slightly more recently, early Christians celebrated Mothering Sunday.
You can guarantee that both festivals had one thing in common, a mother with a pained smile on her face, accepting the somewhat ill-thought gifts from her family.
You can bet Alexia from ancient Athens would have much rather received a new chiton (Greek tunic) than a teganon (frying pan).
And so it has continued down through the ages.
In the run up to Mother’s Day, we are bombarded with advertisements with suggestions for mums. A leading home store has the following on its Mother’s Day catalogue.
- Coffee cups
- Electric blankets
- Frying pans (apparently, people don’t learn)
While all these items are handy to have, wouldn’t your mum prefer something that is a little more special, something frivolous, that doesn’t involve doing things for others, something simply for her own enjoyment?
You know where this is going, right?
Mums need some bling.
Village Jeweller has a great selection of gifts that are perfect for mums of all ages. We can also suit all budgets.
In the run up to Mother’s Day, pop into our new store at 59 Picton Street, Howick or if you are the mum – point Dad and the children in our direction, perhaps with a firm hint.
We’ll take it from there.
